The Magic of Fenway Park

April 5th, 2010 Posted in Boston Real Estate

For anyone planning a visit to Boston or anyone with the good fortune of having purchased one of the lovely houses for sale in Boston, a visit to Fenway park will be on the must do list.  Fenway Park, as anyone who has been there will tell you, is an adventure like no other.   But just what is it that makes Fenway such a magical place?  No doubt, it is some of these very special things:

The History!
With nearly a century of history echoing from its stands, Fenway Park is a big piece of Boston’s past.  Built in 1911, and hosting its first game less than a year later, Fenway Park has been part of many a Bostonian baseball fan’s memory.  Although commercialism threatens at every opportunity, Fenway has managed to retain its original charm and attraction. Suffering a major fire in 1934, the original architect and construction companies were called on to restore the much damaged park.  The wooden bleachers were replaced with concrete stands during the reconstruction but the solid oak seats were rebuilt and are still there today.  Along with all the charm and nostalgia, there are some weird and wonderful facts that keep Fenway’s history alive and well.

  • The foul ball screen behind home plate was the first in Major league history.
  • In 1974 Willie Thorton hit a foul ball that killed a pigeon in flight.
  • Hitting the ladder on the green monster is the only ground rule triple in all of major league baseball.

The Ambiance?
Many would question whether ambiance is the right word to describe the atmosphere of Fenway Park.  Comfortingly uncomfortable is a more apt description, yet it seems to be this lack of modern day comfort that game goers come back for time and time again.  Most will agree the seating is cramped, the restrooms less than pristine, and the crowds on the bleachers just a little shy of out of control.  But all in all it is a fairly family friendly place that holds a special spot in many a childhood memory.

The Fans!!
Throughout its glorious history, one thing has remained unchanged at Fenway, and that is the fans!  Since the very first game in 1912, fans have been demonstrating their loyalty to their team, not only by purchasing tickets but also by adding real home grown spirit that brings the game to life.  To be a fan at Fenway is to bring your heart and soul to the game, to sing along with the music, to clap your hands and stomp your feet and stand up and cheer your team to victory.  And to keep coming back even when they’re not victorious.  It’s drinking beer and eating hot dogs and being part of the one big happy family that is Fenway!

Perhaps it’s bureaucratic red tape that keeps Fenway from being replaced with a modern stadium, but maybe it’s just the fans in South Boston putting their feelings ahead of progress and their hearts ahead of logic!  Such is the magic that is Fenway Park!
